During this phase we decrease the pain associated with your injury and address the main cause of your injury. Depending on the nature of your injury this phase may consist of only 1 treatment session or as much as 6-8 weeks of care. Our goal is to decrease the pain as soon as possible and encourage you to maintain and increase your daily activities.
In addition to the passive care you receive from the therapist you will also be involved in active exercise rehabilitation and ergonomic counseling.

During this phase we take a close look at how your body functions and moves. To simplify, we assess muscle and movement function and determine what the true cause of your injury is. For example, runners often experience lateral knee pain. Most therapy will address the site of pain and decrease the pain that the runner is experiencing. However, the pain will persist over time and never truly be healed. In this instance, it is very important to look at the strength, endurance and function of the runner’s hip muscles. Among other possibilities, this area is often the cause of knee pain due to poor endurance of the hip abductor muscles. We treat all areas that influence your injury in the aim of preventing future dysfunction and improving your treatment.
Some of this assessment occurs during Phase One, but often pain changes the way the body normally moves and we can not get a true picture of function without a pain free state. Therefore, this phase overlaps the pain management phase and will typically occur within the first 1 and 3 weeks of treatment.
Once the majority of your pain is eliminated you will undergo a thorough biomechanical examination of your movement patterns, strength and endurance ratios, flexibility asymmetries and functional limitations. This will aid us in designing an exercise program and treatment regime that will decrease the chances of future re-injury and improve your daily performance. Like all of our treatment this phase is optional and you may wish to discontinue care once your pain has subsided.

This phase of care is designed to counterbalance the effects of the daily stressors on your body. While we can eliminate the majority of pain and rehabilitate much of your injury it often difficult to remove all the stressors that caused your injury in the first place. Whether you are an athlete or an office worker you will be subjecting yourself to cumulative trauma over time. Since it is impossible to remove all stressors (although good ergonomics and proper sport technique is an excellent start) our treatment is designed to keep you performing at your best. This phase is again optional and the frequency of care should be determined by your symptoms. One time per month or every 6 weeks may be sufficient depending on the loads you experience during your activities. During this phase we address the biomechanics of your movements, treat any lingering pain or functional problems and introduce to you different physical training regimes.
